Managed to have a shot at trolling while on Holiday in Skye. We had 2 salmon to 15lbs, 3 pollack to 25lbs from the sea for our trip. with all the heavy rain the salmon were starting to run the rivers, we found a pod of what I would reckon salmon sitting about 100 yards off shore from the rocks (the reason I think this is as soon after we saw the pod on the finder we had a salmon on and then when we trolled over roughhly the same spot we got the other. Finally managed to have a go with my big Mackeral DAM Lure!!!! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Sounds like a cracking trip, how did the fight from the Pollock compare to the Salmon Question , i would love to find the time and the right places to troll for Pollock.

Certainly did. I have had this lure sitting in the bottom of the box for sometime, but never had the guts to use it on the freshwater lochs. Maybe I should give it a swim Smile

Good sport to say the least. My son played the fish. I was busy controlling the boat - the sea was a bit choppy and we were not that far away from some rather nasty rocks by the time we netted the fish. Skye is well worth a visit. I put our success down to luck more than anything else.

Sounds like you've done brilliantly. Glad you had success on a mackeral pattern lure, too. I get a few pike on that colour. My mother was born on Skye and I was over there a couple of years ago. I hadn't taken any tackle but when I saw some of the coastline I quickly bought a cheap rod and reel at Dunvegan and caught pollack (not 25 lbs!), coalfish and mackeral by casting an 18g Abu Toby from the rocks. Constant fish. (I was amazed by the amount of Dutch camper vans, too. They outnumbered the midgies!!!)

A medium spinning rod with a toby off a boat between barra and vatersay for pollack and coalies was one of the best days sport ive had in all my years of fishing. Those fish Pull Hard. Very Happy

Fergie..how true that is. I was always surprised that each fish wasn't twice the size I had thought it was going to be! I'll never use a heavy sea rod for that type of fishing now.

fantastic, done a lot of down rigging in Luce bay and the Irish sea all this summer, two Pollock for 25lb? amazing.

I have had Bass to 9 lb and tope to 50lb best Pollock 7lb but plenty of them.
I am hopeless with the photo bucket, was going to put a full report together at the end of summer on my down rigger exploits.

How far did you have the Lure from the release clip? And what depth?
What type of release clip did you use?
What was your trolling speed? I have found this very difficult to get right with the tide/current at times.
Also trying to set it up by yourself can be a handful I found, because of the tide/current moving the boat while you’re dropping the weight.
Sounds like you had a great time, I have loved it, and it’s been a great challenge.
