PostSubject: Stupid Question   Sat Oct 18, 2008 10:55 am

Sorry all but this is genuine as daft as it may seem. Very Happy

I'm currently deciding what Multiplyer to purchase - An Abu Garcia Classic "Red" Ambassadeur® 5600CB looks like it's going to be my first multiplyer.

My question is - I wind with my left hand although I am right handed. Do I buy the left or right handed reel? confused confused

Also, is it normal for a right handed person to wind with their left? I know my cousin, who tought me to fish in my early years, is left handed so that might explain it if it's not normal. I'm currently showing a mate of mine the ropes and have had him doing the same as me, he is right handed so should I get him to swap over??

Many thanks.

LT not a daft question there is no such thing as a daft question

We all have wound with our left hands when using fixed spool reels. The majority of Multiplier reels are right hand wind. There are a few around that are left hand wind.

It takes a wee bit of getting used to, but it is up to preference. I am right handed and have right hand multipliers and my fixed spool reels are left hand wind.

It is intersting though. When I am salmon fishing I always prefer the left hand wind on my fly reels!!!!!! I presume in all facts I probably prefer left hand wind myself as during my fishing career the majority of reels have been left hand wind and that is what I was used to Smile Smile

My fixed spool reels are all lefthand wind but my multipliers are all right hand wind, the times i have used a left hand wind mulitplier i could never get used to it and just found it totaly weird, you are best trying one of each type and see what you prefer.

Thanks guys.

It's not so much the winding that I'd struggle to do with my right hand, it's casting with my left hand. I do a lot of lure fishing (as in casting crank baits and plastics) and I don't want to be swapping hands to retrieve.

If I want to wind with my left, I buy the left handed, yes??

Yes, that's right LT. The left hand wind (LHW) multiplier means you'll be holding the rod in your right hand. I can't manage with anything but a left handed multi and I'm right handed! You'll notice that, generally, the reel's number ends in 01 when it's the left hand version. ie, the left hand version of the Abu 5600CB is the Abu 5601CB.....the left hand version of the Shimano Corvalus 300 is the 301, etc., etc.

Not a daft question at all, mate. I wouldn't be able to fish properly with my Shimano Castaic 201 if it was the 200 !!

Lads, thank you!!

I feel much more comfortable asking on here than on the Cabelas 'customer service' line.

As a side issue, is my selection of the Abu quoted above wise?? It's on sale at $39......... is that a good purchase or should I be looking elsewhere??

Cheers.

Shocked Shocked Shocked Grab it!!!!!!!

If you can get a 'red' Abu Garcia for a little over twenty quid then don't hesitate! That is a proper 'lifetime' reel.

I have used this reel for years when salmon fishing. One of the best multipliers around. I would agree with Rouge Leader "Grab it" !!! Cool Cool Cool Cool
