I am just finishing off a batch of lures here is a pic of them and a few of my own favourites that i think should do well next year.

The lures are all made from balsa or obeche wood, the balsa lures are eaisier to make and shape but i think the obeche wood makes a better lure as its harder and has a bit more weight to it and will stand up to Pikes teeth better than balsa.

James made me a couple of prototype baitheads for mounting big baits as I had trouble trying to get 12 inch rainbows to troll properly

I am glad to report that one of the baitheads was a success handling the big baits no problem

I have sent the baithead back to james so he can develope it further.

Hope to see them in your shop soon james.

I have been busy making some more lures and i have found out why small Rapalas are just as dear as the larger ones making small lures is sore on the fingers, you have nothing much to hold while carving and assembling them, i have also learned a lot about tuning lures to run right its just tiny adjustments you need to get the lure to run properly.

My next project is to make a "tuning" tank 6ft long by 1ft deep to tank test the lures, my wife is always wondering when she gets in ...

I have been working on a range of glitter plugs, it has been a long and frustrating process at times

As some glitters dont work with certain paints or clear coats and all the variations with certain colours just not wanting to play.

Here is a pic of one of the plugs i will be updating the shop soon and putting them on.

For the past wee while i have been playing around trying to make a copy of the Jensen Lax lure, i have tried using resin like the original or hard foam like the Salmo lures, with not a lot of sucess.

But Balsa versions work well so here is a pictorial on the making of the lures, it is about and 8 to 9 day process to make the lures with most of the time spent waiting for the different lacquers to dry before moving on to the next stage.

Drawing out the pattern

I have had some good results trolling bulldawg type lures deep using dipsys and slide divers. I would now like to refine this as much as possible. I only need to get a max 40 feet down and I would like the option of trolling up to 5 mph. Also, I've had one or two problems with the second rod snagging bottom while playing a fish.

Any recommendations on the best diver to use to get the depths I require and cope with the speed? Also, is there a floating ...

I don’t troll (yet) but do a lot of spinning. I’m, as the name suggests, a bit of an all-rounder, bait, salmon and trout fly fishing too. I like to spin in estuaries and sea lochs but lose a lot of tackle. For that reason I use cheep lures a lot of the time. One of my most successful is the single hook terror. I fish 2 of these on a 5 foot cast below a wye lead. Great sand eel imitations, easy to make and so cheap it does not matter if you lose them

I have been working on and off for about 3 years on Jensen Lax copies, i first tried doing some in wood, it makes nice lures but they would be far too expensive to try and sell, you would cry if you lose one.

I then tried using the hard foam that the DAM minnows are made from , it also makes a nice lure but the foam expands at a differing rate according to the ambient temperature so you end up getting lures of differing sizes ie; fat ones and thin ones depending on how warm the day is plus ...

This is my latest airbrused lures painted on one of James's shad blanks. It is similar in colour to one of the Hybrida style lures that are hard to find.

I hope to give these a go in the near future. Fingers crossed

ive been putting a split ring and swivel straight on to my tomic then tying the line on , ive noticed on the tomic website theyve got the line just tied straight on with a trilene knot ?????? that from what i can deduce from the faint pictures is its the same as a blood knot but you go through the hole in the lure twice before you start wrapping round , this then got me thinking maybe my rig wasnt giving the lure enough action maybe , ive blanked for about 8 solid days now since iv started trollin ...

Clear Coat

I am struggling

Can anyone give me a brand of clear coat lacquer / epoxy etc that is good for clear coating lures. I have tried the clear lacquer from Halfords but it seems to bubble up in water. I have used epoxy on flies before with disatrious results. Is there such a thing as a spar or brush on type of epoxy? the epoxy I used before was in a double syringe, was thick and did not look very bonny when I put it on? Is hard as nails any good or Marine varnish for top coating?

How would the action of the lure change if the hole was drilled above centre or below centre?

I've experimented with varying distances between the diver and the lure, ranging between 5-15ft depending on the type of lure and the type of diver I'm fishing with. I can't decide what the optimum distance is, as I've caught on short, medium and longer distances between the two.

I can't decide whether the diver can sometimes be a distraction to fish or an attractor. What's your optimum distance?

Can any of you chaps help me?

I have the airbrush, auto air paint and a few old spoons and a wooden plug that I am going to try to paint.

I have been advised to use a wood undercoat/primer and then rub the lure with fine sand paper, then spray the lure with the flourecent autopaint (createx) then clear coat.

Last night I had a go and the autopaint did not apper to dry/stick to the lure and just came off (after several hours)

Is there a particular primer/undercoat that I should get ...
