I am just finishing off a batch of lures here is a pic of them and a few of my own favourites that i think should do well next year.

The lures are all made from balsa or obeche wood, the balsa lures are eaisier to make and shape but i think the obeche wood makes a better lure as its harder and has a bit more weight to it and will stand up to Pikes teeth better than balsa.

Have been looking at lochs for next season seen as the lochy is fecked and have decided i am going to have a season on the Awe.Have managed cheapish boat storage quite close to the loch and have heard good things about the fishing.Spoke to a guy who fishes mostly the ford end and he tells me they have had some good fish off the loch.Dont know if i will last the whole season as it can be pretty dour but will give it a bash.Anyone else got new venues planned for next season.

A lot of the trout we catch on Lomond have wound marks on them they are well healed wounds and look to me as if they might be Lamprey wounds as they are round marks that have a long area of skin that has no scale pattern on it , so when the fish has grown you can see the way the wound has healed up.

It is more unusual to get a decent sized trout that is untouched as i would say 8 out of 10 fish have some sort of scar on them.

Is this a Lomond thing or do Trout from other lochs show the ...

I have owned some of the most expensive rods available and yet my fondest memories are of that wee rod my grandad made for me . What was your first fish and how did you catch it

Hope to see them in your shop soon james.

For myself it has been very mixed , it has been a great sea trout season no doubt because i have concentrated more for them this year than usual . As regards Ferox it has been not so good but i havent been puting in so much effort mainly down to the guys i have been out with wanting to fly fish for trout and on that front it has been extremely good.

I have allso had a good year for pike so far and hope to carry on with ...

I have been busy making some more lures and i have found out why small Rapalas are just as dear as the larger ones making small lures is sore on the fingers, you have nothing much to hold while carving and assembling them, i have also learned a lot about tuning lures to run right its just tiny adjustments you need to get the lure to run properly.

My next project is to make a "tuning" tank 6ft long by 1ft deep to tank test the lures, my wife is always wondering when she gets in ...

Here is a pic of one of the plugs i will be updating the shop soon and putting them on.

I am amazed how lightly fished it is regarding trolling.

The one problem you have trolling is forget the downrigger because you will spend all day lifting and dropping as the depths change so much.

There are numerous large trout caught flat lineing and this is the way to go, you will allso be catching lots of small trout as it is stuffed with fish

But Balsa versions work well so here is a pictorial on the making of the lures, it is about and 8 to 9 day process to make the lures with most of the time spent waiting for the different lacquers to dry before moving on to the next stage.

Drawing out the pattern

I was fishing the ythan estuary recently for sea trout and the keeper from whom i get my permit told me there were over 100 seals spotted at the mouth of the estuary

I heard of the damage one seal inflicted on the pike population of Lomond ,so just how much damage is now being done to migratory fish with hundreds of seals patrolling the estuarys.

I recently painted a batch of Super Shadraps for an angler who was going to Lake Nasser in search of Nile Perch i painted the lures in a dark purple tiger pattern, the guides were a bit sceptical when they saw the lure colours and didnt want to use them but at the end of the week they were begging the guys to leave them some cos they tirned out to be the Hot lure
