How often do you grease the trailer bearings? After every trip or every so many?

we do ours at the end of every season, mainly to empty out any water that has got in so the rust doesn't get a hold while it stands unused thru the winter. Mind - we only put ours into fresh water, if you launch into the briny, you can't really do it often enough.
On a different note - our trailer tyres have been fine all winter and suddenly one went flat the other day and they haven't been anywhere yet! Bugger! Mad Mad

Cheers for that FF2.

I have the bearings checked and serviced every year and I been pumping grease in after every trip in freshwater via the niple on the wheel. I am doing it too often?

I had i bearing go on me once, i never want it to happen again Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad so i ended up putting "bearing savers" on my hubs it just like a spring loaded plate that keeps the grease under pressure to keep the bearings coated in grease all the time, so far they have been ok, touch wood Neutral Neutral

I asked about the bearing protetctors when I got the boat serviced earlier this year. I was told that they were not really worth putting on??????

Do I need to top up the grease after every trip via the nipple on the wheeel? or can I do it a few times throughout the year? Question Question Question Question Question I fish mainly in freshwater.

don't know anything about "bearing protectors" but they sound like a good idea if they keep the water out of the bearing. All that grease you're putting in must be going somewhere - usually it will leak out and make a mess. It might be more worthwhile to take the hub-cap off after every trip and let any water (that has got in while launching) drain out. Water is the enemy - look at car wheel bearings, they will usually last the life of the car because they normally stay dry throughout their lives.

One thing to watch is if you are pumping too much grease in it can blow the seal at the back and you end up with grease all over the inside of your wheel, the bearing saver just makes sure the grease that is in the bearings stays there under pressure and should hopefully everything ok.

There is a bearing saver device in the states that has a clear cap and i think it is a heavy oil you put in it and with it having the clear cap you can visually check the amount of grease/oil in the hub.

Thanks for that guys. I was amazed when I was told that bearing protectors were not worth adding. I wonder if the company could not be bothered trying to get them to fit my trailer?

That american cap sounds like the job. I think I will stop putting grease in every trip and try and do it possibly every month depending upon how often I am out on the water.

I have noticed that on one wheel the grease that comes out of the rear of the wheel is white and runny in consistencey. However the other wheel is black/brown. I had better be careful as I have been pumping grease in and the old stuff comes out of the rear. Hopefully I have not done any damage to the seal at the back. I did this last season and was told that the bearing were fine so hopefully it is alright. But lesson learnt. Time to be less enthusiastic at putting the grease in!!!!!!!!

Here is a link to the USA site they look good but you probably find that they dont do a size that will fit our hubs http://www.liqualube.com/

Allways check the wheel nuts for the right tightness its not so long ago I was nearly wiped out on the dual carriageway. one nut saved me from wipeing out my boat and car or worse . I am fecked if i know how they slackened off but boy was i lucky
another thing allways carry a spare wheel if you get a puncture in the back of beyond you will have to leave your boat and go find a garrage it happened to me
and it wont happen again . For the sake of a few quid it is money well spent i was thinking i would go back and the boat would be stripped bare

Those wheel nuts might have been tampered with - sad, but things like that happen these days.

Liquilube is supposed to be the business, but, as pointed out, you might not get it to fit UK/European hubs.

Spring loaded bearing protectors. I tried these years ago, and did not really get on very well with them. It was too easy to get grease leaks from the rear seal. Then one actually fell off on the motorway - could have killed somebody! Its quite easy to check normal bearings and give a quick injection of grease if needed. Take bearings out once a year, clean and repack. Its not a difficult job once you have done it a few times. Trailers used for freshwater launches should not need repacking more often than that. Its not like you are beach launching and getting silt in there.

Let your bearings cool before launching - that will help stop water being sucked in.

I run AlKO sealed bearings on my trailer. Just got 8 years out of a set.
