PostSubject: Check your trailer   Fri Oct 23, 2009 3:28 pm

I was out fishing yesterday and today i was just cleaning out the boat and checking things over and saw that one of my trailer wheels was lying at a slight angle and thought "shit the brearing has gone" but when i checked it i found that 2 of the 6 bolts that hold the suspension on were missing and further found that one of the other bolts had sheared, so the suspension unit was lying at an angle ready to break off that caused the wheel to look wonky .
Got some new bolts with nylock nuts and got everthing sorted i am now going to go round the trailer and replace all the bolts with new ones with nylock nuts, it was the nearside wheel that was the problem its obviously all the potholes and broken up road edges that has given that side of the trailer a hammering.

Glad i spotted it in time pale pale

You got lucky there james, always always check trailers before, during and after trips.Trailers have a mysterious habit of loosing nuts at the most awkward of times Embarassed .Touch wood i have not had trouble with bearings but nuts are a pain in the ass.I bought a spare set to carry with me on trips.

Good point James. I had a bit of a disaster with my old trailer earlier on in the season. The plastic side rollers got broken when I was trying to retreive the boat after being out in a rather stormy Loch Earn. I have got a new trailer now an indespension From Dave at Arran Boats - superb piece of kit. boat just slips on and off. My only problem is if I put my auxillary 4 hp engine on the boat (along with my 15hp) without the trailer being attached to my L200 the trailer tips - too heavy at the back. I will have to be careful.

Boat & engines are currently getting serviced. just ned to get the Lifejackets sent off to be serviced and I will be ready for 2010 season. probably a wee bit early but hey ho

Another option is to move the winch post forward if the axle cant be moved.
If your trailer is properly ballanced it will tow so much easier.
We should all be maintaining our trailers as they are a very important part of our fishing.
I'am allways hearing of problems with trailers its just lack of maitainance.i.e heard of someone loosing part of their trailer at the weekend.

Alex..

The most important thing is a spare wheel anyone who sets out without one is asking for trouble . I speak from experience its a bast-r- when you have to leave your boat and trailer and go search for a garage and if like me its about 40 mile to the nearest garage your thinking will my boat be ok when i get back its not nice
believe me

Wise words there scotty. My boat is in for its annual service. I had a phone call last week to say my bearings were a bit dodgy after just only 6 months. I bought the trailer new and used it only about 3 times. Just shows you
